    Understanding changes in teacher beliefs and identity formation: A case study of three novice teachers in Hong Kong

    Novice teachers often undergo an identity shift from learner to teacher. Along this process, their instructional beliefs change considerably which in turn affect their teacher identity formation. Drawing on data collected mainly through interviews with three novice English teachers formore than one year, the present study examines their firstyear teaching experience in Hong Kong secondary schools, focusing on changes of their English teaching beliefs and the impact of these changes on their identity construction. Findings reveal that while the teachers’ initial teaching beliefs were largely shaped in their prior school learning and learning-to-teach experience, these beliefs changed and were reshaped a great deal when encountering various contextual realities, and these changes further influenced their views on their teacher identity establishment, unfortunately in a more negative than positive direction. The study sheds light on the importance of institutional support in affording opportunities for novice teachers’ workplace learning and professional development

    Pattern formation and growth kinetics in eutectic systems

    Growth patterns during liquid/solid phase transformation are governed by simultaneous effects of heat and mass transfer mechanisms, creation of new interfaces, jump of the crystallization units from liquid to solid and their rearrangement in the solid matrix. To examine how the above processes influence the scale of microstructure, two eutectic systems are chosen for the study: a polymeric system polyethylene glycol-p-dibromobenzene (PEG-DBBZ) and a simple molecular system succinonitrile (SCN)-camphor.;The scaling law for SCN-camphor system is found to follow the classical Jackson-Hunt model of circular rod eutectic, where the diffusion in the liquid and the interface energy are the main physics governing the two-phase pattern. In contrast, a significantly different scaling law is observed for the polymer system. The interface kinetics of PEG phase and its solute concentration dependence thus have been critically investigated for the first time by directional solidification technique. A model is then proposed that shows that the two-phase pattern in polymers is governed by the interface diffusion and the interface kinetics.;In SCN-camphor system, a new branch of eutectic, elliptical shape rod, is found in thin samples where only one layer of camphor rods is present. It is found that the orientation of the ellipse can change from the major axis in the direction of the thickness to the direction of the width as the velocity and/or the sample thickness is decreased. A theoretical model is developed that predicts the spacing and orientation of the elliptical rods in a thin sample.;The single phase growth patterns of SCN-camphor system were also examined with emphasis on the three-dimensional single cell and cell/dendrite transition. For the 3D single cell in a capillary tube, the entire cell shape ahead of the eutectic front can be described by the Saffmann-Taylor finger only at extremely low growth rate. A 3D directional solidification model is developed to characterize the cell shape and tip undercooling and the experimental results are compared with the predictions of the model. From the investigation of cell/dendrite transition, a model is proposed, from which the condition for the onset of the transition can be obtained

    A Two-stage Polynomial Method for Spectrum Emissivity Modeling

    Spectral emissivity is a key in the temperature measurement by radiation methods, but not easy to determine in a combustion environment, due to the interrelated influence of temperature and wave length of the radiation. In multi-wavelength radiation thermometry, knowing the spectral emissivity of the material is a prerequisite. However in many circumstances such a property is a complex function of temperature and wavelength and reliable models are yet to be sought. In this study, a two stages partition low order polynomial fitting is proposed for multi-wavelength radiation thermometry. In the first stage a spectral emissivity model is established as a function of temperature; in the second stage a mathematical model is established to describe the dependence of the coefficients corresponding to the wavelength of the radiation. The new model is tested against the spectral emissivity data of tungsten, and good agreement was found with a maximum error of 0.64

    Bus Dwell Time Estimation and Prediction: A Study Case in Shanghai-China

    AbstractSince dwell time usually takes a large part of bus travel time, the large variability in dwell time always makes accurate prediction of arrival time\travel time difficult. On the other hand, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automatic Passengers Counters (APC) systems are increasingly implemented for transit operation, which yield a vast amount of real time data. The emphasis of this research is to develop a bus dwell time model based on AVL and APC dynamic data, which is capable of providing real time information on bus arrival times. This model can be used for stop-based control strategies as well. The dwell time model established in this paper not only includes the number of passengers boarding and alighting, but also considers secondary factors like crowding and fare type. The number of boarding and alighting passengers is estimated by passenger arrival rate, bus headway, and capacity. Collection method, service mode, capacity restriction and occupancy of the vehicle are all taken into account in the model. Furthermore, the model is validated with the data of bus line Jiading 3 in Shanghai, China. It is compared with two previously developed models for the same route in four data sets. The results indicate that the models can be well applied in high demanded urban bus lines, especially in presence of high occupancy of vehicles. Since the effectiveness of estimation models is verified by statistical analysis methods, it will help in obtaining a reliable algorithm which can be adopted for bus arrival time/travel time prediction and assessing transit stop-based dynamic control actions

    Development and Evaluation of Bus Operation Control System Based on Cooperative Speed Guidance

    Buses often have strong bunching or large interval tendency when traveling further along the route. To restrain this further deterioration of operation service, this paper developed a bus operation control system to dynamically adjust bus speed, bus dwell time, and traffic signal timings along the running path. In addition, a simulation platform was developed to evaluate the proposed control system with the actual data collected from bus route number 210 in Shanghai. The simulation results show that the proposed control system can mitigate the amplification trend of the headway deviation along the route to produce headways within a given tolerance
